Mosswood Farms Organic Bakery in Micanopy, FL

SAM_4092SAM_4095Located in America’s second oldest city, Micanopy, Florida, Mosswood Farm Store and Organic Bakehouse serves up delicious and healthy treats daily from 10am-6pm. Opened since 2007 in a converted Florida cracker house at 703 Cholokka Boulevard this family owned “general store” sells locally produced and/or handmade items such as soaps, heirloom vegetable seeds, candles, honey, jams, jellies, and of course their own fabulous baked goods! In 2008 they built an outdoor wood-fired brick oven and began baking organic artisan sourdough breads(they are yummy!). In 2010 they renovated the store and added a full coffee and espresso bar along with making their ever-expanding array of pastries, brownies, tarts, and quiches. The stores philosophy is to promote environmentally-friendly practices, taking care to source quality natural, sustainable goods.
I had the pleasure of talking with one of the owners and their pastry chef Emily Piazza. After working a regular 9-5 job she now enjoys working at a place she is obviously very passionate about. Her goodies are baked fresh daily and change depending on what is fresh and in season. One thing they always have is a nice assortment of brownies. Just based on appearance alone these are good looking, large, thick specimens! The Salted Caramel Brownie which is made with a praline caramel icing has just the right touch of sea salt to provide a fantastic contrast of salty-sweet. The brownie is superbly moist with just the right amount of chocolate flavor throught. Some chocolate chips provide a bit of crunchy texture with the creamy icing providing added sweetness and texture contrast. This is the best brownie I have ever had! It was so good my wife and I made a second trip on our way home(In Gainesville for The University of Florida Homecomming weekend) to get some more! This receives 4.75 Stars for “Is it Good”!

Next was the Gluten Free Peanutbutter Chocolate Chip Cookie. This is a big cookie with large and delicious dark chocolate chips. Emily said it was a simply recipe made from organic peanut butter with some egg added to hold it together, plus the chips. On first bite you get a nice crunch which will surprise you since there is no grain in it. There is a wonderful heavy taste of peanuts which I think most peanutbutter cookies lack. The recipe could have used a bit more sweetness but overall I thought this was a great gluten free cookie. 4 stars here.

The Pumpkin Chess Square is a cross between a cookie, a pie, and a bar. There is a nice crunchy cookie texture on the outside crust(ask for a corner or end piece)with a pie like pumpkin texture in the center for a sensorial party in your mouth! There is just the right amount of spice added to give the sumptuous pumpkin a nice kick. Really a delicious bar! 4.5 stars.
