Trader Joe’s Gluten Free Chocolate Chip Cookies

Trader Joe’s is a chain of upscale supermarkets catering to health conscious middle-class shoppers since 1958. As of October, 2011 they had 365 stores in 31 states with approximately half of those located in California. It is owned by a family trust since 1979 and therefore not publically traded.
I recently visited Florida’s first store located in Naples(a second location will open in Sarasota in September). It is a typical store with a nice selection of unique products featuring many healthier offerings such as organic and vegetarian foods.
The Gluten Free Chrispy Crunchy Chocolate Chip Cookies were recommended by a store employee who said they were Trader Joe’s best cookie. He further stated that you could not tell the difference between them and the version containing gluten. So of course, me being “The Dessert Doctor”, I had to try both versions and compair. As you can see from the picture above the cookies look identical(the right one is the gluten free version). The non-gluten free offering is called Highbrow Chocolate Chip Cookies with almost identical ingredients to its gluten free sibling. The only difference is the substitition of rice flour in the gluten free version for the wheat and barley flour with some xanthan gum added to the gluten free batch to hold everything together. Both cookies are 140 calories for a two cookie serving with a large percentage of that coming from fat. The fat here being butter which gives this cookie a great taste and great crunch and I think hides the rice flower substitution well. The flavor is so buttery that it doesn’t matter what the flour is here as both cookies taste identical to each other. Even if you prefer a soft cookie, the delicate crunch won’t bother you too much considering the sumptuous flavors of the butter and wonderful chocolate chips. The chip to dough ratio here is perfect as the chocolate doesn’t take over but does do it’s job nicely. I give this Gluten Free Chocolate Chip Cookie 4.5 stars for “Is it Good”. For “Is it Good For You” it gets 2 hearts, as even though it is gluten free it is not organic, and contains quite a bit of sugar and fat.
